STYX - The idea and concept

A huge darkened room on the banks of a river right in the middle of a city. Illuminated only by large gleaming video pictures. Video art is light art. Video pictures are moving light pictures. They are fixed to the walls like archaic frescos. Without the protecting frame of a TV monitor. They are stark naked. Finally they speak for themselves.

The grand art gallery of the European Academy of Fine Arts in Trier becomes a video lounge. There are seats all over the place. The viewers can walk around or sit down in order to watch the works in full length. Pictures like they have never seen before. They become engrossed by a cosmos of pictures that do not merely reflect the outside world, but seem to emerge from memory and mind´s eye. This makes the visit to the exhibition an adventure, but also an act of intimacy: a visit to the visual interior world. Both, adventure and intimacy, deal with barriers and transgression. Like the mythical river Styx that embodies the frontier between the living word and the underworld, between consciousness and subconsciousness, the exhibition presents extraordinary pictures on the borders of dream and reality.

Unseen images: Pictures of dreams

Since Thales water has been considered to be the source of life. Water as a medium plays a significant role in Bill Viola´s famous video "The Reflecting Pool": the viewers witness a magical game of reality and virtuality, of physical images and phantom reflections.
